The National Baseball Team of Hellas has a 21-year history of competing on the world stage of
Baseball. It all started in 2002 when Greece fielded its first National Team and competed in the
2002 B Pool European Championship, which was played in Hungary. This was a qualification
tournament, and the winner of this tournament would play in the 2003 European Baseball
Championship that was held in The Netherlands.
The Greek team easily defeated all of its opponents by mercy rule scores and was thus
promoted to the A Pool of European Baseball and qualified to play in its first Seniors European
Baseball Championship with the best European Baseball-playing countries. Greece fielded an
exceptionally good team and only lost in the final against the host country, The Netherlands, by
a respectable score of 2 – 0, and took second place and the Silver Medal! This tournament
was also the European Qualification tournament for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. The
Greek team’s 2nd place finish secured Greece a place in the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.
Since then, Greece has competed in 7 more Seniors European Baseball Championships with
final standings from 4th place to 14th place, and with an average of 8th place overall.
The Greek team that went to the Czech Republic for the 2023 European Championship had high
hopes of doing very well in this tournament. The first stage of the tournament involved playing
against the 3 other teams in our preliminary group, which were Spain, Czech, and Austria.
Unfortunately, our preliminary group featured 2 of the best teams in the entire tournament,
including Spain, which won 1st place with clear victories in all of its games, and the Czech
Republic, which finished the tournament in 5th place.
The Greek team’s results included a total of 3 games won and 3 games lost. The games we lost
were to Spain, Czech, and Belgium. The games that the Greek team won were against Austria,
Hungary, and The Ukraine. With these results, the Greek team finished the tournament in 13th
place out of 16 teams and this finish secured Greece’s place in the 2025 European Seniors
Baseball Championship.
